How to Choose the Right Plate Rolling Machine: 5 Key Parameters

How to Choose the Right Plate Rolling Machine

Choosing the right plate rolling machine requires more than matching plate thickness and width to a machine specification. Two customers may both need to roll 20 mm × 2500 mm steel plate, but the correct machine can be different if one needs a 900 mm diameter cylinder while the other produces a 2500 mm diameter tank shell. Before selecting a plate rolling machine, five parameters should be confirmed: material, maximum plate thickness, working width, minimum finished diameter and pre-bending requirements.

Material Grade

Material strength directly affects the force required during rolling. Carbon steel, stainless steel and high-strength structural steel of the same thickness do not necessarily require the same machine capacity. When requesting a machine selection, provide the actual material grade whenever possible, such as Q235, Q355, S235, S355, ASTM A36 or stainless steel. If the exact grade is unavailable, provide the yield strength or tensile strength.

Maximum Plate Thickness

Plate thickness is one of the main parameters used for machine selection. However, maximum rolling thickness should not automatically be treated as maximum pre-bending thickness. A machine may be capable of rolling a certain thickness during normal forming while having a different capacity during plate-end pre-bending. If the workpiece requires pre-bending, both capacities should be confirmed.

Maximum Working Width

Plate width affects machine load and roll deflection. A machine designed for 2000 mm plate and one designed for 3000 mm plate should not be considered equivalent simply because their maximum thickness ratings are the same. Provide both the maximum plate width and the normal production width when requesting machine selection.

 Minimum Finished Diameter

Finished diameter is frequently overlooked during machine selection. Specifying only “20 mm × 2500 mm” is not enough. Rolling a large tank shell and rolling a small-diameter cylinder require different forming conditions. The achievable diameter is affected by plate thickness, material strength, working width, roll diameter and machine geometry.

 Pre-Bending Requirements

During cylinder rolling, the leading and trailing ends of the plate cannot always achieve the required curvature through normal rolling alone. Pre-bending is used to reduce the remaining straight section before completing the cylinder. This is particularly important for pressure vessels, storage tanks and other welded cylindrical components.

3-Roll or 4-Roll Plate Rolling Machine?

After confirming the basic workpiece parameters, the next step is to determine the machine structure. A 3-roll plate rolling machine can be suitable for general-purpose, medium-plate and heavy-plate forming depending on its configuration. A 4-roll plate rolling machine provides strong plate control and is well suited to repetitive production and CNC-controlled rolling. The correct choice depends on the actual production requirement rather than simply the number of rolls.
